The 2017 Springfield Volleyball Team has some very exciting goals this year, such as winning the league title which would add another year to the championship banner. The team’s unbelievable chemistry can be attributed to the girls playing together since 7th and 8th grade.

With this possibly being coach Knight’s last year, the girls are determined to make him proud. Knight has been coaching the ladies volleyball team at Springfield Local for the last thirty years. He has coached generations of girls throughout his career and made his name very well known around the area.

The new athletic league changed this year from the ITCL to the MVAC (Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference). The team has acquired more confidence this year since they are playing a lot of different teams at a more competitive level. Makenzy Capouellez, junior, says “I believe we have a shot at even districts not just our league. We’re excited and looking forward to playing teams we have never seen before. Some change is always good.”  So far, they have a winning record with only three losses halfway through the season.

The girls not only have chemistry, they have developed some spectacular skills and a positive mindset over the years with coach Knight. Kaelen Yemma, junior, is the setter for the team. Yemma states, “Volleyball is such a mental game, as soon as you make a mistake you have to forget about it and focus on the next point. That’s the most challenging part.” The team not only has goals of winning the league, but also going far in the tournament rounds and possibly winning districts. Ellie Centofanti, a junior backrow and weak side hitter, says, “Yes. This is a challenge but we’re ready to take on anything as a team. We just want to be successful.”

The team plays next on September 18th at home. The match will start at approximately 6:30 p.m. vs. Poland and they are predicting to bring home another win.
